Paper bags, brush bundles, resident-only compost yards. Five towns, five sets of rules.
Every spring somebody asks us to leave the clean-up pile at the curb because the town picks it up. Sometimes that works. Usually it does not, because the compost yards around here are for residents hauling their own material, not for contractors dropping a truckload.
Here is the short version of how each of our five towns handles yard waste, and what we do instead.
Curbside leaf and brush collection runs on your normal trash day through the growing season. Paper bags only, roughly 50 lb per bag, brush cut short and bundled. The Winter Street facility is for residents with a sticker, so a contractor truck gets turned around at the gate.
Dedham runs seasonal curbside yard waste windows in spring and fall rather than year round, so a July hedge job has nowhere to go at the curb. Kerosene-free paper bags, no plastic, and the transfer station is resident-permit only.
Westwood does scheduled spring and fall pickups plus a resident drop-off. Big oak streets like the ones off High Street drop late enough that the last town pickup is often before the last leaf falls, which is exactly why we stage clean-ups in two or three visits instead of one.
Walpole homeowners have a drop-off option with a permit and seasonal curbside windows. Larger lots out toward the town line generate more volume in one visit than curbside limits allow, so hauling is the only realistic plan.
Medfield leans on its resident transfer station with a sticker. Between the big wooded lots and the conservation land, fall volume per property is the highest on our route, and it all goes on the truck.
Debris leaves with us on every visit, every town, no exceptions and no separate disposal line on your invoice. Nothing sits at your curb waiting on a town schedule, and nothing ends up somewhere it should not.
